INTRODUCTION
By the time children leave our school we want each individual to have a positive attitude towards learning and towards life, to have the self confidence to deal with all aspects of schoolwork in a sensible, systematic and independent way.
In order to achieve this a great deal of importance is placed on communication through language, through number and in using modern communication technologies. The curriculum is carefully planned to also provide a wide range of educational experiences suitable to the age and stage of development of each child, as well as adhering closely to the requirements of the National Curriculum.
The National Curriculum consists of ten areas; five core subjects – English, Mathematics, Science, Information Technology and R.E., and six foundation subjects – Design and Technology, History, Geography, Music, Physical Education, Art.
Each of these is taught as a separate subject, with links made between areas where this is natural and can help children learn. We also teach Personal, Social and Health Education, which includes Citizenship through other curriculum areas. ICT plays an increasing role in the world, and will be used to further children’s learning as part of a range of subjects as well as taught as a separate subject.
Children will be taught in a variety of ways, as a class, in groups and as individuals, depending sometimes upon the area of learning and at other times upon the ability of the child. Individual programmes are regularly devised for pupils as they reach different stages of development.
This broad and balanced curriculum is carefully planned to ensure progressive coverage of all curriculum subjects. Lessons include thematic and subject approaches as is felt relevant. Educational visits are felt to be important to children's learning and are planned into topics and classroom experiences. So too are a number of speakers who come into school to bring expertise and excitement.
The long term curriculum plan is based on the National Curriculum Programmes of Study. Each Plan has been carefully worked out to ensure breadth and balance across the years and progression through the key stages.
